Independent mayoral candidate for Townsville, Greg Dowling, says Mayor Jenny Hill was being short-sighted in her rejection of Brisbane’s bid for the 2032 Olympics.
Mr Dowling has dismissed Mayor Hill’s assumption that the bid would be detrimental to Townsville, saying a Queensland Olympics would have a huge upside for the region.
“It will make Queensland a talking point around the world, which has a flow on effect to all communities,’’ Mr Dowling said.
“The Olympics has the potential to bring major economic and social benefits to Townsville, boosting tourism and small business.
“It would bring people to the region to spend their money, and put Townville on the world map,’’ Mr Dowling said.
If elected Mayor at the upcoming local government election, Mr Dowling said he would fight hard to have Olympic events held in Townsville,
“I will work hard with all levels of government to leverage the best opportunities for this great city,’’ he said.
